Homework

3.1.7

Let's discuss the ideas/views that you came up with for your homework task

Future developments in ICT

Starter - 3, 2, 1

In pairs on your scrap paper :

Learning Objectives

Parallel Hybrid

Hybrid vehicles

  • To understand possible future developments in ICT and transport
  • To be able to evaluate the impact of such developments

Activity

The engine and the electric motor drives the car

Requires very complex computer systems to monitor power requests and battery levels; Do we need to use the motor, engine or both to drive the wheels at any one point?

Series Hybrid

Engine is there to charge the batteries, not drive the wheels.

Can be very efficient as computer controlled engine will either be off or running economically at a constant speed.

Brain storm the problems that are faced by road, rail, air and sea transportation - many will share the same problems i.e pollution

  • 3 proposed alternatives for petroleum-fueled engines

Impacts and Consequences - Electric vehicle

Now think of technologies that could solve these issues.

It isn't a specific question. The question doesn't even state what kind of transport; rail, road, air, sea?

  • 2 ways that public transport has been improved by the use of ICT

Future technologies

  • Recharging; when, where, how, how often?

(Some questions will be specific, so you need to have a good understanding of issues and developments)

  • 1 way that ICT has improved road safety

Question taken from the exam paper:

  • Inductive charging - built into the road - initial cost? pay as you go? Where will electricity come from? once implemented be safe and convenient

5 mins

  • Charging points at the side of the road - who pays?

Plenary

Discuss the impacts and consequences to the transport system that could be bought about by future developments in ICT .

1, 2,3 plenary activity

Use your notes to answer the question....

Task

Use the following resource:

S:\COMPUTING\KS5\TB\Lesson 2

Automation

Choose your favorite developments and make notes about how those developments might impact transport and what the real consequences will be.

10 mins

Remember to look at:

  • Balanced argument - advantages

& disadvantages

  • Different points of view
  • You don‘t necessarily have to agree with your arguments
  • Consequences- positive & negative
  • why is it an advantage/disadvantage?
  • what effect does it have?

Automatic driving system can accelerate and brake automatically causing less accidents

Cars can drive close together allowing more traffic and traffic can drive faster

Risk of breakdown of system causes large scale crashes, drivers confidence based on system not their ability
