To Kill a Mocking Bird: Chapter 7

Nathaniel Diaz

Period 2

Explanation

From this quote, its discernible that Jem is progressing in his maturity because of the way he addresses the person. Jem quickly switches from thanking the person for one gift, to providing a wholehearted thanks for all the gifts the person has given. This subtly indicates his maturity in that he no longer focuses on single acts as would a child, but takes a look at the broader picture of all the gifts that he and Scout had been given.

Explanation

Quote 2

This quote illustrates not only Jem's maturity, but also Scout's lack thereof, and how a boundary has been clearly set between their two mindsets. Scout can't understand why Jem is crying, as her juvenile mentality wouldn't allow for the reason why he is sobbing to cross her mind. Jem laments the loss of his connection with, whom he suspects is, Boo Radley, and how he wasn't even able to cement the unspoken friendship through an acknowledgment of gratitude, a thought that is much more mature and understanding than what might have been produced out of a mind such as Scout. This separation between the two siblings only serves to highlight how one is maturing and growing in a way that the other can't understand, emphasizing the chapter's theme.

""Do you itch, Jem?" I asked as politely as I could. He did not answer. "Come on in, Jem," I said. "After while." He stood there until nightfall, and I waited for him. When he went in the house I saw he had been crying, his face was dirty in the right places, but I thought it odd that I had not head him
