Scout can't understand why Jem is crying, as her juvenile mentality wouldn't allow for the reason why he is sobbing to cross her mind. Jem laments the loss of his connection with, whom he suspects is, Boo Radley, and how he wasn't even able to cement the unspoken friendship through an acknowledgment of gratitude, a thought that is much more mature and understanding than what might have been produced out of a mind such as Scout.
