Reef Restoration Project Manager

Katie Thomas

Tradeoffs:

If I don't go to college:

-I would would have minimal knowledge about environmental science and marine biology.

-I wouldn't have a degree so I won't be very successful financially nor would I have the qualifications to advance much in this career.

Here is a healthy coral reef.

Here is a picture of a diver growing/placing more coral in a coral reef.

Tradeoffs:

Starting Salary:

Hours:

It's a full time job, so I would work about 45 hours a week.

Job Description:

Why I am interested:

I would be a marine biologist, so I would know the basic of all sea life. A reef research manager would overview restorations and make sure everything is in place to make sure the restoration can keep functioning and moving smoothly.

Marine biology has always fascinated me because there is another world in the ocean that we have just started to explore. There is so much to learn and uncover, but we are killing it faster than we can research it. This is why being a part of reef restoration projects is so interesting to me.

There is always room to improve, but a reef restoration manage is the end goal, so a research field assistant is probably where I would start.

If I go to college:

-I will have more debt.

-I would not have time to internship/volunteer during an off year to see if this career i right for me.

For a research field assistant, starting salary is around $16,500, which is where I might need to start, then a reef research manager earns about $80,800 a year.

Required Education:

-A degree in marine biology is a minimal requirement.

-Special training is required as well

Brainstorming

Which Include...

I started by listing things I am passionate about:

-Environmental Science

-Theatre

-Being a part of a community

-children's attitudes, optimism, joy, innocence

-health of the ocean and how it correlates to people's health

-marine biology

-being a leader

Choosing a Career:

Marine Biology and environmental science intrigue me the most on the list so I chose to look at a career of being a reef restoration project manager. This way I can be a leader, too. I would need to do different jobs before ending up here, but this is the end go.
