I think the reading level of this book is fifth or sixth grade, but the violence is a little bit too adult, so I think the reading level is like seventh grade or maybe eighth. I would rate this book an 8 or a 9, and would recommend it to any strong reader who doesn't mind violence.
My favorite character is Rose because she is so kind to Oliver, especially when he needs it. She has a good heart, and I like that about her.
The part I enjoyed most about this book is when Mr. Brownlow adopts Oliver. I like this part of the book because I think that Oliver is such a good and nice boy and he doesn't really deserve to be alone all his life with famiy and no one who loves him.
Nancy tries to keep her promise to Rose, but Sikes wouldn't let her go because he didn't know where she was going, and she wouldn't tell him. Noah Claypole, also known as Moris Bolter, is told by Fagin to spy on Nancy. Mr. Bolter found out that Nancy is telling Mr. Lobserne and Mr. Brownlow all their plans. Mr. Bolter tells Fagin. Later that niht Mr. Bolter tells Sikes, and Sikes goes and kills her. Soon everyone finds out about the murder, so Sikes tries to run some place where no one can find him. He hides with another robber from Fagin's crew, but an angry mob finds the house he is in. He ties to lower himself from a rope into a ditch around the back, but one of the robbers from the house told the angry mob and they all crowded around the house. Sikes decides that when he gets down he'll make a run for it, but he is going crazy with fear, and sees Nancy's eyes in the crowd and slips. The rope ties around his neck, and hangs him to death. His dog tries to save him, but lands in the ditch, and, hitting it's head on a rock, knocked his brains out.
Around this same time, Mr. Brownlow is making Monks explain that Oliver is his half-brother(They have the same dad). In this explanation, Oliver finds out that Rose is his aunt, and that she was adopted by Mrs. Maylie, from a man and woman who adopted her from her parents. Oliver's mother is Rose's sister. Mr. and Mrs. Bumble are brought in to confess that they sold Monks the locket and ring.
The Jew is in court and when they prove him guilty he goes to jail. He will be hung on Monday. On, Monday, just as said, he is hung.
Nancy rushes to Rose's house to tell her all of this information. Nancy promises to come over every Sunday night from eleven until twelve at London Bridge. The next morning Oliver is so happy. He has seen Mr. Brownlow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rose and Oliver go to his house and Rose brings him out to see Oliver. Mr. Brownlow is so happy. Noah Claypole is reintroduced when Charlotte is walking with him. They are traveling to London. Charlotte is carrying all the heavy bags and Noah is only carrying ONE bag. They walk into a bar and Noah meets Fagin. He is immediately atracted to the buisness and starts working for Fagin . He is now known as Moris Bolter. Fagin sends Bolter off to see the Artful, Jack Dawkin's trial. He was found guilty.
One day the police come to inspect the robbery. No one wants them there, but they are respectful anyway. A few nights later, Oliver sees the Jew out his window. He tells everyone and they search for hours trying to find him. When they cannot find him they return to the house and everybody goes back to sleep. The next day, Harry Maylie, Mrs. Maylie's son proposes to Rose. Rose says no. A few days after this, Mr. Bumble and Mrs. Bumble, Mrs. Corney had married Mr. Bumble, went to a pawnshop to meet a man named Monks. Here Mrs. Bumble sells the gold ring and locket Sally stole to Monks and Monks drops it down a trap door into the sewers where it can never be found. a night or so after, Monks gets together with the Jew to tell him all this information and Nancy hears the conversation. She also hears, the next night, Monks saying Oliver is his brother.
Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse and his mother died in childbirth. When he was born he went straight to the workhouse. When he grew too old to stay there (10 years old), he was taken by Mr. Bumble to a much larger workhouse.
One day Oliver asked for more food, and it changed his life forever. Five pounds to anyone who will take him. First Mr. Gamfield wants Oliver, to be a chimney sweeper, but Mr. Buble does not give him up. Next is the Sowerberries. They take him and feed him meat, for the first time in forever. Noah Claypole, a Charity Boy told Oliver rude things about his mother. Oliver got so mad he started to attack Noah. Of course, that doesn't work out, and everybody is attacking him.
My surprise ending is that Nancy DOESN'T get killed, and nobody dies, because I think that there is way too much dying and kids shouldn't be thinking about dying at such an early age. The bad people, instead of dying, are put in jail until they learn their lesson.
That night Oliver decides to run away. He sets off for London the next morning. He had been walking for seven days straight, when he fianally got to London. He met a guy named Jack Dawkins. Little did he know, Jack and his friends were pickpockets, and he found that out a few days later.
Fagin sends Oliver off to work with the rest of the boys. Oliver stays back as they pickpocket a gentleman reading a book. He is too astonished to move. The two boys take off. When the man reaches for the handkerchief the two boys stole, Oliver dashes off. Everyone starts running after him, even the two who stole the handkerchief . They wanted it to be less obvious it was them so they wouldn't get in trouble.
Oliver is taken to court. They prove him not guilty. He goes and lives with the gentleman, Mr. Brownlow. One day he goes to return some books for the gentleman, and he gets captured by Nancy and Sikes, members of Fagin and Jack Dawkins' crew. He is taken back to rob a house for them. The night of the robbery, as he is shoved through the window he gets shot. Sikes pulls him out and runs for it. The cops and everybody are close on his tail, so he throws Oliver in a ditch and dashes off. Mrs. Corney finds out that Oliver's mother left him gold in her will and that a woman named Sally stole the gold. Sally says this, and then lays back and dies.
The next morning, Oliver decides to go to the house to get help. At first they think he is the robber. But he is so young, they don't believe it. The Maylies help Oliver get better. Then they take him in to live with them.
Oliver is good even in the face of evil. This is how the struggle between good and evil is a major theme in this book.
In this book, the poor people are the only ones who work. It is hard to escape being poor. Society treats you different if you are poor then if you are rich. The poor people are always the unlucky ones. This is how the struggle of the poor in society is a major theme in this book.
Rose and Harry get married. Mr. Brownlow adopts Oliver. Mr. Lobserne, the doctor, moved by Rose, Harry, Mr. Brownlow, and Oliver. Mr. Grimwig visits them quite often. Charles Bates turns his life around and becomes a farmer. Moris Bolter does the same, and becomes an Informer. Oliver gives Monks some of his dad's money from the will, hoping he can turn HIS life around, but instead, Monks moves to America, and dies in prison. Oliver and his friends help him make a tombstone that says "Agnes" In honor of his mother. Oliver lives a life for the rest of his life. The End.
I think the auther was trying to make people see how some people in the world are really bad, but if you are truly a good person, you will stay a good person no matter how terrible the people around you are. I think Charles Dickens also wanted to make people think more about the poor, because poor people are treated very badly, simply because of how much money they have.
