A Spirituality of Fundraising

For the love of money is a

root of all kinds of evil.

1 Timothy 6:10

Go, sell what you own,

and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.

Mark 10:21

Spiritual Crisis vs Financial Crisis

Fundraising is, first and foremost, a form of ministry. It is a way of announcing our vision and inviting other people into our mission.

Do we embrace this attitude

as curia, clergy, laypeople?

St. Ignatius

Ignatian Principles of Fundraising

2 Corinthians 9

The Joyful Giver

Historical background

  • wanted to be mendicant like Franciscans therefore personal poverty was central

2 Corinthians 8

Encouragement to Be Generous

St. Paul

  • in middle ages bishops and abbots were wealthy landowners, this is a radical shift in religious life as was Franciscan Order
  • Missionary work was supported by the state

Francis' Conversion

San Damiani and Assisi

  • Started to see how schools could be a way to form men for Christ en masse

1 Corinthians 16

The Collection for

the Lord’s People

  • Founding and maintaining these institutions required funds and financial acumen/management to achieve God's work

Where can we learn best-practices?

  • Ignatius learned from businessmen and merchants of his time - used their models to be successful for God's enterprises

What are some key messages from

St. Paul "the Fundraiser-Apostle"?

St. Francis

God's Fool

How can we live the message of

San Damiani in our Church today?

Singular focus on mission

"Historical Building Preservation Society Syndrome"

When we ask, we ask on behalf of others, not ourselves

Live simply and within our

means, God will provide

Not My will be done but Thine - spiritual poverty

Rule of St. Francis

Not based on parish need, but on need of parishioners to share

Process not a product

10 years to transform a parish

Depends on testimony of lay people to motivate parishioners

Pastor walks fine balance of supporting efforts vs. either doing nothing at all or taking on full effort himself

Sacrificial giving is about forming a conscience to help Catholics understand what the Lord is asking of them.

Not simply a mathematical formula or "membership dues"

Fr. Henri Nouwen

A Prayer for Fundrasiers

Good and gracious God,

We recognize all life is a gift and a blessing.

We thank you for your most generous love.

Encourage us to be persons of honesty and integrity,

worthy of proclaiming the Gospel,

in this sacred ministry of fundraising.

Help us to always reverence the sacred space where

our donors and our missions meet.

Give us openness to listen to the needs of our donors.

Give us joyful spirits, and an eagerness to engage others.

Give us hopeful imagination and creative vision,

recognizing generosity in even the smallest gift.

Give us strong, steadfast hearts in times of discouragement.

Give us trusting hearts, knowing that the fruits of labors will

be realized long after we are gone.

Give us faithful hearts, deeply committed to Your realm.

Let us feel Your Presence so that we know we are never truly alone.

Remind us always that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters,

we do for you.

We ask this in Jesus’ name, and in unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
