United States vs. Starzecpyzel

Summary of Case

How did this affect the law?

Description of Case

Date & Case Number

Defendants were accused of signature forgery on two documents. They were examined by Forensic Document Examiner who concluded that the signatures were not genuine.

April 3rd, 1995

Case N. 93 CR 553 (LMM)

The defendents Roberta and Eileen Starzecpyzel are charged with conspiring to steal paintings, sculptures, and jewelry from Ethel Brownstone. The defendents had delievered over 100 stolen items of artwork to Sotheby's and Christie's auction houses to forward the sales to a swiss bank.

The landmark case of United States vs. Starzecpyzel was a criminal prosecution case that would go on to set precedents for the use of the term "expert witnesses" and challenge the evidentary reliability of forensic document examiners.

It effects the law because now when forgery is suspected, the court can call in Forensic Document Examiners to look at the documents. The court can either reject or accept their findings, and they mostly accept because it is very reliable.
