David Grew frustrated at the lack of work for educated Aborigines at mission settlements and in the late 1890`s he got a job as a store man for an Adelaide book-keeper in the Point Mcleay store. On the 4th of January, 1902 at Point McLeay he married a Tangani woman from the Coorong, Katherine Carter, nee Sumner, a servant. By 1909, David had developed and patented a modified hand piece for shearing. David was obsessed with discovering the secret of perpetual motion. Between 1909 and 1944, David made patent applications for nine other inventions, which included a centrifugal motor, a multi-radial wheel and a mechanical propulsion device.

In 1912 David led a deputation urging government control of Point McLeay Mission. In the early 1920`s David studied Aboriginal mythology and published his versions of legends, david also wrote `My life story` and Leaves of Memory`.

David remained free from the restraints that were placed on Aborigines and in 1953 he received a coronation medal.

In his nineties he worked on some of his inventions, he thought that he was close to discovering the secret of perpetual motion. David died at Talem Bend hospital on the 7th of February, 1967, next to his son and was buried in the cemetery.

What tribe did they belong to?

David Unaipon belonged to the Yaraldi (Ngarrindjeri) tribe, who lived in the lower Murray region, which is in the Fleurieu Peninsula. The Ngarrindjeri tribe is centered around the lower region of the Murray river.

What are they famous for

David Unaipon was a preacher, an author and an inventor. He created about nine inventions, which included a centrifugal motor, a multi radial wheel and a mechanical propulsion device.

In 1928 to 1929 he assisted The Bleakly inquiry into Aboriginal welfare, at this time he was the best known Aborigine in Australia, David was accepted as his peoples spokesman. His skill in manipulating members in the press lent authenticity to his statements at a time when governments were concerned with the so-called `half-cast problem`.

In the 1930`s, David published poetry and he published legends in the 1950`s and 1960`s.

Where did they grow up?

David Unaipon was born on the 28th of September, 1872 at the Point Mcleay mission, South Australia. He was the fourth of nine children of James Ngunaitpoli and his wife Nymbulda. They were both yaraldi speakers of the lower Murray rivers.

How has the individual impacted on the development of Australian society

In 1912 David led a deputation urging government control of Point Mcleay Mission. The year after the he gave evidence to the royal commission into Aboriginal issues and became a subscription collector for the Aborigines Friends Association. In the 1920s and 1930s he changed the government Aboriginal policy.
