The Settlers Came

On July 1, 1867, the colonies of the Province of Canada (now called Quebec and Ontario), Nova Scotia, New Brunswick joined in Confederation to form the country of Canada.

Canada’s government and laws would be based on those of Britain.

The work of the Canadian government would be done in English and French.

Victoria was the Queen of Canada.

The Fur Trade

Furs of Beavers, and other animals were being sold in Europe for a lot of money. The furs were being made into hats and other fashion items.

First Nations People's Traditions

We have learned that First Nations people used the land for everything that they had. Food, shelter, clothing, medicine. We know that they valued the land and respected the land.

How do you think that changed with the Fur Trade?

Where Could Furs Be Found?

The Hudson's Bay Company decided to take furs from the land that we now call Canada to sell back in Europe. However, there were already French people in the area and a competition was born.

First Nations people who lived on the land didn't really have a say. They had to choose to team with the English or French.

First Nations Metis Inuit

So far we have learned a lot about how First Nations people used the land and respected the land.

Building of Forts

Who was doing the work?

First Nations people would guide French or English workers from the Hudson's Bay Company or the North West Company. These workers were known as Voyageurs. They were strong men who would paddle canoes down rivers to find furs.

Both of the big companies decided that they needed to build forts, to make trading easier and to claim land.

Talk to your group members, where do you think they would build forts?

Fort Edmonton

Fort Edmonton was built in 1846. It was a major fur trading fort.
