Plot Summary

Jonas lives in a world where everything is the same. No one has any feelings, or choices. Every December a ceremony is held where all the children advance another year, (a group birthday) and a different stage is given to represent that particular year. Jonas is going to year 12; when you turn 12 you are given an assignment (job) to do the rest of your life (until you go to the house of old).

When Jonas is "selected" as the new Receiver he must now get training from the Giver. In training he receives past memories that don't exist anymore; for example the memory of sunshine. He is also allowed to ask the Giver any question he wants to about anyone or anything. He now knows the truth about his community and he must do the impossible in order to give everyone feelings and choices again. But will he be able to accomplish this risky task?

Conflicts

Themes

  • How the Elders have shaped the community into "sameness". It's when everyone is generally the same. If someone were to be born with a disability, they were to be released. Also, if there were twins born, then the one who weighed lighter would be released.
  • Jonas being skipped at the Ceremony causes conflict because no one knows what is going on.

Family, Friends, and Life- You can't chose your family, they are chosen for you. You find out things you never knew or don't want to know. Sometimes friends go separate ways and you grow apart. In life your destiny is not only chosen by you, but the way others have an impact on you.

Obedience- Rules have to be obeyed to keep yourself or others out of trouble. You have to follow rules made by the law and family. Rules are made for reasons, some may be ridiculous and some completely necessary, but all have a reason.

  • When Jonas starts his training with receiving the memories, especially colour, he feels bad and angry at his friends for being content with their boring lives.
  • Jonas finds out the truth about "release" and how it actually works. He sees a different side of the community that he didn't know existed and never thought he'd see.

Memory- Once Jonas is given his assignment he is given memories and visions. People take advantage of memories and not pay much attention to them. Some lose their memory or have short-term memory. It teaches you to not take advantage of them because once they are given out you may never get them back.

Trust- You have to learn who to trust and who to not trust. You have to trust the people around and you have to trust yourself. It could get you to do what you need to do and build your confidence.
