Discovering Geography: The Largest Frontier

Minds-On: Thinking about Geography at the broadest sense

What is Geography Literacy?

After seeing this video, what do you think Geography could be about?

In the words of National Geographic:

"Geo-literacy is the ability to reason about Earth systems and interconnections to make far-reaching decisions."

This is what Grade 7/8 Geography is all about! It's about laying foundations in knowledge and concepts in order for you to make informed decisions about our earth and its societies.

The End!

BUT WAIT! Geography encompasses and is integrated into a lot of our other school subjects:

  • Data Management in Mathematics
  • Environmental Science, Sustainability, and Fieldwork/Sampling in Science
  • Reading, analyzing, creating and inferring which are skills developed in English
  • Understanding cultures, politics and economics in both History and the Social Sciences.

So, what is Geography?

The Study of Places:

Geography is a science, that is known as physical geography. Physical Geography includes learning about things like: physical landscapes, climate, the environment, regions of the world, ecological integrity of our ecosystems, natural resources, physical patterns and changes overs time.

Geography is the Study of People and Places

The Study of People Includes:

The study of people is an art instead of a science which involves learning about how places affect cultures, where people live, how they build, history, economic development, sustainability and use of our resources, politics and inequalities.

Quick Write: How do you think we use technology in Geography?

....What does that really mean?

Well, that's all fine and dandy, but what is the point of learning it?

What you will learning in grade 7/8 can apply to real world skills and abilities, for example:

  • How to read and create different kinds of maps
  • How to analyze and create graphs
  • Analyze different environments and how the people living in the might be affected by climate change
  • Understand how organizations protect natural resources.
  • Develop ways to create sustainable future communities
  • Understand how land use influences politics and how countries make decisions on trade.
  • Assess the impacts of natural disasters on populations.

3 Minutes - Don't worry about spelling or grammar

Types of Technology:

  • GIS (Geographic Information Systems): Allows us to look at various points and places on earth to compare and analyze them. Ex. Google Earth Pro
  • Netbooks for research
  • Presentation tools
  • Excel for data input and graph creation

Okay...so you've given me all these abstract skills I will be able to do after grade 7/8 but how does that apply to real life?
