Feudalism:

Its important to note that ‘To Penshurst’ was written at the end of a feudalistic era.

We can argue that ‘To Penshurst’ as a an art form acts to preserve Feudalist tradition, against the rise of anti- feudalism ideals.

Noblesse Oblige:

Landscape:

Idea of inherent Virtue, strongly informs Jonson's Poem. This is evidenced by Jonson's representation of Penshurst as a dynastic symbol. The Country House, would have been part of an inheritance that would passed from father to eldest son. With the Inheritance of the home, there is also an inherent of civil power and community obligation ( Noblesse Oblige).

This ideal of moral righteousness is further emphasized through Johnson's use of landscape, works in collusion rather than in conflict with feudalist understandings of civil order. Nature in this sense not only aids but sanctifies the Aristocratic country home.

When we consider the Romantic ideal of nature, where by the “natural world” as a moral and more godly space.

To Penshurst by Ben Jonson

The Country House Poem:

To Penshurst is widely recognized as the prototype for the “country House Poem” that recurs throughout English poetry and literary tradition. Whereby the inhabitants (both land owners and community members) attain happiness by fitting smoothly into a harmoniously balanced social and cosmic order.
