Bias, Prejudice, and Stereotypes

Guidelines to prevent

bias/prejudice/stereotypes:

  • Notice when others are acting this way, and inform them what is wrong, by doing so kindly and understandingly.
  • If you catch yourself doing so, try to stop it from happening again and apologize to whomever you may have been BPS to.
  • If you hear a negative rumor or stereotype spreading, try to start the idea it may not be true.
  • Be open to many ideas and opinions, don't automatically form an opinion right away. Hear what others have to say.

Bias, Prejudice, and Stereotypes

  • Try to respect people and look past their stereotypes, and look at the as a person, rather than an idea.

In today's world, many people are not aware of the biases, prejudices, and stereotypes they contribute to. Today, I hope to inform you about the effects and consequences of these things.

By Lily Barney

From this presentation, I hope for you to learn:

  • What bias/prejudice/stereotypes are, and to be aware if you are acting on them.
  • Consequences of acting on the biases, prejudices, and stereotypes.
  • Ways you can prevent these from happening.

What are they?

  • A bias is having a strong opinion, usually based on personal experiences
  • Prejudice is making a judgement before having enough information for your judgement to be accurate
  • A stereotype is an oversimplified or exaggerated unfavorable generalization about a group of people.

What do they look like?

Consequences

Acting on your beliefs of bias, prejudice, and stereotypes can result in many consequences.

We see these things all the time. You probably see stereotypes on a daily basis. Small things, like even someone saying "You run like a girl!" is a stereotype.

A consequence of stereotyping can also lead to harm. This is less likely to be physical, but that can still happen. When one stereotypes someone else, it can create a huge generalization, usually in the negative. This will lead to emotional harm and possibly avoidance of a certain group, based on that stereotype.

Eventually, if enough people believe in these biases and stereotypes, they will discriminate. After the discrimination gets to an extreme, they may start to segregate, and separate these other groups of people in society. This can split up an entire society.

A consequence of being prejudice would be the physical or emotional harm to a certain group of people. Certain extremists may learn these prejudices from others, and begin to act on them. They may begin to discriminate or even attack another group, because of this prejudice they heard.

We also see people be prejudice and biased very frequently. When someone says they hate a certain person or celebrity, they may be prejudice, and not have enough information to know fully why.

Another consequence is after people find the segregation to not be enough, they will commit forms of physical attack. Peoples' property and even the people themselves can be severely hurt because of this discrimination.

The most extreme case as an effect of bias, prejudice, and stereotypes is actual murder, or extermination. This is when people become extremists and things get out of hand. This is by far the biggest consequence. People get to the point where they can't stand another group of people, and being massacre and other forms of extermination.
