Vancouver is actually one of Canada's fairly new cities --128 years old. Even then, it barely survived its first year. A controlled fire was let loose by a gust of wind that destroyed 1,000 buildings in a little over 45 minutes.

Vancouver's most well known pioneer was the legendary 'Gassy Jack' Deighton in 1867 who introduced the first saloon to downtown Vancouver (which was called Gastown). Around that time, Stanley Park was created in honor of the previous Governor General.
