BAHRAIN: A Timeline

The Future of Bahrain

The Tylos Era

The Portuguese Settlement

What do you know about Bahrain?

Bahrain was referred by the Greeks as Tylos.

From the 6th to 3rd century BC Bahrain was included in the Persian empire.

The Greek historian Strabo believed that the Phoenicians (a Mediterranean confederation of maritime traders) originated from Bahrain.

In this time, Bahrain was the centre of pearl trading.

Greek admiral Nearchus is believed to be the first of Alexander the Great’s commanders to visit Bahrain.

A Greek historian stated that much of the islands were covered in cotton trees and that Tylos was famous for exporting walking canes engraved with emblems that were customarily carried in Babylon.

Some place names in Bahrain go back to the Tylos era, for instance, Arad is believed to originate from "Arados", the ancient Greek name for Muharraq island.

Portuguese war took place between 1507 and 1622.

The Persian Kingdom of Ormus participated in the invasion of Bahrain.

In the fighting for Bahrain, most of the combat was carried out by Portuguese troops.

Portuguese rule came to an end in 1602 after the Ormusi governor, started executing members of Bahrain's leading families.

Bahrain was controlled by two other Iranian dynasties, the Parthians and the Sassanids.
