Sulphur Dioxide & Sodium Hydroxide

Sulphur Dioxide

a) The chemical formula for sulphur dioxide is SO2

b)

Physical properties : Pale yellow, non metallic, solid, tasteless, odorless and poor conductor of heat and electricity

Chemical : Normally stable but reacts with Halogens

c) Sulfur Dioxide is obtained from the air. The main source of sulfur dioxide comes from the industrial activity that processes activities that contain sulfur

d) Sulfur dioxide is sometimes used as a preservative, which means it can maintain the color appearance of a fruit, and prevent it from rotting

e) It is not toxic but it is a choking irritant gas. It is harmful to the environment because water mixed with Sulfur dioxide can cause acid rain, which leads to deforestation

f) In my opinion sulfur dioxide can somewhat provide survival needs but when it turns into acid rain it causes deforestation and we need trees in order to survive

Thank you :))

e) Some of the negative aspects of using sodium hydroxide isthat it can harm people. It can cause redness, burns, blistering and can permanently scar your skin, if contacted with your eyes it could lead to severe burns, swelling and blurred vision

f) In conclusion, I think that sodium hydroxide is an important chemical in our lives, although it is harmful to us humans, it can keep our environment clean from all of the waste that we are producing

c) Sodium hydroxide is manufactured by using the Castner-Kellner Process

1. Salt water is put in a tank

2. The electrons take the chloride away from the sodium

3. As the chlorine builds up and combines to create chlorine gas, there's sodium ions roaming around

4. The water in the tank is broken up with the electrons into hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions

5. In the tank, the hydroxide ions and sodiums ions are combined causing it to create sodium hydroxide

d) Some of the uses of sodium hydoxide is that it is used for drains and oven cleaners in our society. Sodium hydroxide benefits our society by altering the fats and grease into soap. which then dissolves in water. Without sodium hydroxide pur society would have been living with clogged pipes which can lead to flooding

a) The chemical formula for sulfur dioxide is NaOH

b)

Physical: Sodium hydroxide is that it is an odorless, white crystalline solid.

The density is 2.13g/mL

Chemical: Highly reactive and reacts violently with water or organic acids
