Some Reactions

Impact

Motivation

  • Canadian's fire setting did not seem to effect U.S. trading with other countries
  • No new countries, besides negotiations with Britain and France, involved with trade/shipping rights
  • Closer to "home" Jackson also involved in recognizing independence of Texas

Embargo Portrayal of an American Ship

Tariff On Imports: (1828-1829)

  • Short: Expanded trade with British West Indies
  • Long: Later lead to unsuccessful trade w/ China and Japan
  • Wanted to freely trade with Brit. and France
  • Jackson negotiated w/ British West Indies (1830)
  • French reparations paid back - then negotiations began

In conclusion, Andrew Jackson shaped the Unites States into a superpower today due to his assertive decisions with foreign affairs. Foreign affairs played a significant role during Jackson's term, as well as important domestic affairs. The previous president, John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), lead the way for some of Jackson's decisions, and the following president, Martin Van Buren (1837-1841), followed up with additional ideas and decisions of Jackson.

Exterior Reactions

Once a foreign country was approved of applying a tariff on imports (textiles, iron) to the coastline of the United States, other countries suggested for tariffs on imports they were providing for the US, but the Tariff of 1828 appealed to Jackson the most.

Trail of Tears

Effect of Indian Removal Act of 1830

Foreign Countries/Persons Reactions

  • British Parliament passed bill abolishing slavery (1833)

- practically opposite to Indian Removal (act) and relocation of Natives

  • Seminole Native Americans fought three wars because they did not move when ordered, but eventually had to in 1840
  • Native American leaders signed treaties giving up land instead of fighting
