DIALOGUE 1

A: Oh man, dogs are the best.

B: You took the words right out of my mouth! Dogs are great. Man’s best friend and all.

A: I just wish they didn’t taste so strange. It such a pity that they’re not more like rabbits – adorable and delicious.

B: Wait … what? You eat dog? Did you just say that you eat dog?

A: Heh heh, did I say that? Nah! I meant to say that people who don’t like dogs have strange taste.

B: Oh! Right! I’m with you 100% on that one, buddy.

B: You took the words right out of my mouth. Every time I find a bar I like, the hooligans move in and ruin it.

A: Oh, do you remember that bar on Main Street? That was a great little place, right?

B: You and I always see eye to eye on these things. Maybe we can make the Irish bar our new haunt.

New York City

Pull a situation out of a hat. Take one minute to think about what you will say. Then, improvise the situation with your partner.

New York is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States and one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. The city is referred to as New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part. It has also been called by many nicknames such as the “City that Never Sleeps” and the “Center of the Universe.” But the Big Apple is the most famous nickname.

New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world. New York traces its roots back to 1624 when it was founded as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic. It was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790.The Statue of Liberty, which is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in the middle of New York Harbor, in Manhattan, was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France. The statue greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a globally recognized as a symbol of the United States and its democracy.

WRITER'S WORKSHOP

TODAY'S TOPIC: The INTRO

We see eye to eye.

Yeah, I’d go along with that.

Absolutely!

You took the words right out of my mouth.

I couldn’t agree more.

You have a point there.

I’m with you 100% on this one.

Opening lines: Bitter long cold winters. Soaring mountain peaks. Sparsely populated land. Rich native traditions. Teaming urban areas. And Stephen Harper. Who? I’m not talking about Alaska – but instead our closest neighbor bordering us on the east – Canada.

Thesis: Canada is a beautiful and diverse country shaped by military actions.

The Preview: There is a lot to Canada but time only permits us to explore its geography and people, its government and some of its military history.

My Audience should care about this because: They are our neighbors and our hockey loving compatriots. Yet most of us don’t really know much about the second largest country in the world. But given they are Alaska’s border, and we share many things in common, we shouldknow something about Canada.

Speaker Credibility established by: I’ve driven through Canada several times to get to Alaska, but never really spent time there until last summer. The vacation I took to Canada encouraged meto do more research to learn about Canada and to interview a professor in the UAA History Department.

Transition to first Main Point: Okay, let’s get started with some basic information about Canada.
