Wagonmaker.

Farmer.

Married Martha May

Family life

Had 7 children

Had low income

Pre Civil War

Served in Tennessee Volunteer infantry during the Mexican War.

Got a stomach virus that sent him home.

East Tennessee was strongly divided but favored to the Union.

Living in Exile.

Became a pilot.

Recruited for Union Army

Gave information on Conferderate activities

Kept a secure mail line.

Civil War

Brutal battles in moutains

20 expeditions

8000 miles

4000 fugitives

Joined Union Army as a Captain

Led raids in NC mountains

Left Army in 1865

Post Civil War

Petitioned U.S. Congress.

1867 published his war memoirs.

U.S. house of representatives.

Life was thratened for years.

Died January 6, 1908
