In this part of the book, Judge Taylor asks for the thoughts of the jury. They then unanimously choose “guilty.”: “I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury: ‘Guilty... guilty… guilty… guilty…’” (Lee 240). This quote relates to my topic of racism and discrimination by showing that the jury thought that Tom Robinson was guilty even though there was evidence that he was innocent.

Here, Scout is describing where the Ewells live and the surrounding area: “A dirt road ran from the highway past the dump, down to a small Negro settlement some five hundred yards beyond the Ewells.” (Lee 194). This shows racism and discrimination since the two communities are separated. Even the Ewells who are the lowest class in the white community are treated better than people in the black community.

Scout has just finished describing how the black community is separated from the Ewells and the white community. She then describes how the white people disregard the property of the black community by destroying it: “It was necessary either to back out to the highway or go the full length of the road and turn around; most people turned around in the Negroes’ front yards” (Lee 195). This is another example of how racism plays into the lives of people living in Maycomb. They do not care about the black community at all and do whatever they want to them.

The Beauty of Gray by LIVE fits my theme of racism and discrimination as it describes the prejudice of modern day people. It does not use the names of races but it uses colors which can be taken as names of races. The song also describes the “separated” worlds of black and white communities. The Beauty of Gray mentions “It’s not a black and white world. To be alive I say the colors must swirl” which means that they think the two races need to stop quarreling about their differences if they want to make things right.

Bibliography

If I told you he was your brother we could reminisce

Then you would go about your day

If I said you ought to give him some of your water

You'd shake your canteen and walk away

The perception that divides you from him is a lie

For some reason you never asked why

This is not a black and white world

You can't afford to believe in your side

This is not a black and white world

To be alive I say the colors must swirl

And I believe that maybe today

We will all get to appreciate

The beauty of gray

If I told you she was your mother

We could analyze the situation and be gone

If I said you ought to give her some of your water

Your eyes would light up like the dawn

The perception that divides you from her is a lie

For some reason you never asked why

This is not a black and white world

You can't afford to believe in your side

This is not a black and white world

To be alive I say the colors must swirl

And I believe that maybe today

We will all get to appreciate

Yes we all will get to appreciate
