Representation: Gender

Her body/figure

She wears outfits to show off her figure. This represents females as objects to stare at and 'check out'.

Her hair

Camerawork

The artist

She wears her hair like this to represent her as innocent and therefore young, encouraging males to like younger females.

There are lots of close ups to show off her beauty. Also, there are many mid-shots and long shots to show off her dancing skills and her body. This is showing the audience that is okay to stare a women's body as by the camera angles we are made to look at her body. Also, as the artist, she is going to be focused on and is the the one wearing the most revealing outfit.

Could anyone be offended?

Personally, I don't think that anyone would be offended by this video, as it doesn't clearly and directly tell females how to dress, act or what to do, etc. It is just an implied meaning - although it is reasonably obvious. Some people may be offended by the adaption of the school uniform as school uniforms are put in place as a rule to be followed and as a form of discipline of the pupils. As the uniform is clearly changed to become more 'cool', it shows to teenage girls that, that is the way they should be wearing them and that it is the best way to in order to be 'popular'. This may offend parents as, it is disregarding their upbringing of their own children and causing them to become rebellious. The only people offended will be people that look into the meaning, I don't think many people will be offended though.

Close ups

Britney Spears as a female is represented through her looks and figure. She is constantly wearing outfits that flaunt her body. Her hair is always tied in little girl's style which gives her an innocent look. There are also lots of close ups of her face to show off her beauty.

Britney Spears - Baby One More Time

The close ups show the audience her beauty and perfection (even though she has been heavily made up with make-up).

Stereotypes

This music video conforms to the stereotype that females are provocative. Her outfits throughout the video are revealing and also the title of the song is 'Baby One More Time' which in itself is sending a negative messages to teenage girls. As she is a 'teenage school girl' in the video and in 2003 when it was released, her fan-base was mainly teenage girls, it is shocking that the way she is subconsciously persuading girls to act and dress is by showing off what males want to see, by adapting their school uniform and also by getting the 'guy' - as she looks longingly at her 'crush'.

Mise en scene

The location or set design of the video is set in a school. Within the school there is a set of a classroom and a school gym, There is also an outside scene which is not clear or specified where it is, but gives a chance for the artist to show off some choreography. The use of the school theme runs through to the costume where at the beginning she is wearing a school uniform that is adapted to be 'revealing'. This suggests that the way to be cool and popular (like Britney) is to adapt your uniform to show off your body and also it encourages males to stare at the female body and this is directed at school girls.
