Now you know how aerodynamics in Nascar work and how to decrease lift (speed) to give a car more down force (handling) or to decrease down force (handling) for more lift (speed)
In ESPN's NASCAR coverage, a special-effects gimmick called Draft Track shows viewers how aero push works in real time, representing air currents via animated green puffs on the screen.Side skirts -- long horizontal pieces running low along the side of a vehicle -- were developed in car racing as a way to reduce air pressure underneath and gain downforce. But this exterior feature could be knocked off the vehicle, resulting in a sudden loss of downforce and high probability of an accident. Many racing authorities have banned side skirts, but they remain a flashy feature of certain passenger cars.
Stock car lift is basically the opposite of down force. Stock car lift doesn't mean the car is flying. Race cars are usually built with rake which means the front end is lower than the back end preventing lift. This makes there less speed and more stability. Wing appendages, used on Formula One and Indy cars, are turned upside-down to provide down force instead of lift. Sometimes cars will still go airborne even with these devices.
Down force is a downward force produced by air pressure. It creates a stronger pressure between the tire and the road. It is the opposite of needing lift to fly a plane, because you need the pressure to stay on the ground. To improve the down force you need to reduce the air pressure under the vehicle. When down force is increased it also causes more drag so it is important to balance down force and speed.
Aerodynamics in Nascar is one of the most important parts of Nascar. Without aerodynamics the cars would go really slow and the sport would be based on the car with the best engine
Drafting is when a driver uses the car ahead of him's aerodynamics to use less energy and move faster. When doing this both cars move faster. When drafting is used it has a reduction of downforce on its front tire this makes the handling of the car decrease and makes it easier to spin out. This is also called Aeropush. To get rid of Aeropush simply ease off of the accelerator (gas pedal).
