Deccan Wars

Background

Also known as the Mughal-Maratha Wars or The war of 27 years

Fought between the Marathas and the Mughal empire

The Mughals were led by Aurangzeb while the Marathas were led by Rajaram

With odds against them, the Marathas eventually emerged victorious

Initial Conflicts

in 1681 with the Mughal emperor Aurangzebs invasion of Maratha empire

  • Aurangzeb commanded an army numbering half a million soldiers which was more than three times that of the Maratha army
  • He had hundreds of thousands of horses and elephants

The wealthy Mughal Empire was also aided by the Portugeese, British and several other nations

The War

The Wars End

Even after his father suggested ending the war, Aurangzeb continued pursuing

The toll of the war was much greater than the Mughals originally expected

The war was proving not winnable for the Mughals

The 200 year empire was crumbling underneath itself as the all the nations wealth and resources had been strained

The war lasted 27 years consisting of hundreds of battles.

The war appeared very one sided as the Mughals had the Marathas outnumbered physically and economically

The Mughals used all their resources immediately, expecting an easy victory

upon being held off for many years their resources began to run dry

After many years of battle, in 1700, Rajaram died

  • His queen Tarabai took over military duties
  • "It was her character that saved the nation in that awful crisis"

Legacy

The Maratha, against all odds, won the war

After massive amount of casualties the Mughal

Empire was split into small kingdoms

The Maratha began to expand north and take over the fallen territories of the Mughal empire
