The mission of the American School Health Association is to transform all schools into places where every student learns and thrives. The American School Health Association envisions healthy students who learn and achieve in safe and healthy environments nurtured by caring adults functioning within coordinated school and community support systems.

-Initially membership was limited only to physicians.
-In 1937, before his death, Dr. Howe revised bylaws that allowed membership not only to physicians, but to those who had basic medical science training, including teachers who had training in any health related field.
-A health educator, Clare Turner, was the first health educator, not a physician, to be elected president.
-The organization then officially became The American School Health Association
-The American School Health Association began in 1926 with its first conference in 1927 when Dr. Howe, a physician and member of the American Public Health Association, wanted to form a more specific association that addressed health and health education in schools.
-In 1926, 63 physicians who were initially members of the American Public Health Association joined Dr. Howe in forming the American School Physicians Association. Membership grew to 325 in 1927.
-Howe’s goal was to ensure “a safe and clean environment, screening students for problems that could affect their health and learning, caring for their health needs, and educating them about health practices”
-Published Journal of School Health (JOSH)
- Is committed to communicating information regarding the roles of schools, school personnel, or the school environment in facilitating optimal growth and development.
The Journal distribution includes researchers, school administrators, health educators and other healthcare professionals.
-The goal is to provide a program, service, and environment to advance healthy children and youth.
1. As a member of the ASHA you will receive free Continuing Education Contact Hours.
2. You will receive monthly copies of the ASHA peer-reviewed Journal of School Health.
3. Once you become a member the ASHA is able to provide you with a Health and Business Insurance Plan.
4. You will also be allowed to participate as a member of the ASHA Section and Counsel. This allows members to be a part of a specific group with similar traits and goals as themselves and they will work together in order to achieve these goals.
5. Members are given access to the ASHA Career Center which gives discount rates for job postings.
