1973 OPEC Oil Embargo

  • Changed from gothic style to occult and gore
  • Low-budget gore films were successful
  • Slasher films became popular
  • Psychological, supernatural, and evil children started to take over the horror film industry
  • “this could happen to me”
  • People weren’t scared of giant bugs and monsters anymore

1970’s Horror Movies

“Restrictions on language, adult content and sexuality, and violence had loosened up, and these elements became more widespread. The hippie movement, the civil rights movement, free love, the growth of rock and roll, changing gender roles and drug use certainly had an impact.”

  • OPEC banned the exportation of Petroleum in 1973
  • This made a shock in the United States and resulted in a supply driven slowdown.
  • Caused stagflation because oil prices skyrocketed, which fueled high inflation on all products.

Watergate Scandal

  • Nixon instituted wage-price controls. This made wages too high, forcing businesses to lay off workers and kept prices high which reduced demand.
  • U.S. was taken off gold standard which increased the price of gold and made the value of the dollar fall dramatically.
  • U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) fell by 3.2 percent.
  • The housing and stock market crashed.
  • In 1975 unemployment hit a height of 9 percent.
  • Break in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters
  • Attempted cover-up
  • Bugging the offices of political opponents
  • Nixon recorded conversations
  • Nixon resigned
