MIDDLE CLASS
ENSLAVED AFRICAN AMERICANS
- Tradesmen, merchants, shopkeepers, doctors and attorneys
- Easily earned living
- Lived in cities and towns
- Some political and social influences
- Owned few slaves
- Children learned to read and write
- Unpaid labor source controlled by white master
- Allowed few personal items
- Most slaves were born and died on the same plantation
- Lived in one room slave cabins
- Could be sold upon the master dying, disobedience, or for extra cash
- Many families divided
- They would work in the fields from dawn to dusk including the women and children
- Given limited amounts of food
- Illegal for slaves and slave children to learn to read and write
- Punishment was common

LOWER CLASS
- Unskilled, uneducated
- Work was limited
- Parents uneducated
- Children were uneducated
- Children worked for parents
- Little social or political influences
FREE AFRICAN AMERICANS
Enslaved African Americans
- Particular skill to them EX- Carpentry
- Skills allowed them to be hired out
- Sometimes allowed to keep some of the money earned
- Possibly freed by owners
- Skills allowed them to earn a living in south
- Children could be taught to read and write but only at home
- More economic opportunities in the south vs the north
- They had to carry there freedom papers with them at all times with the fear of being returned to slavery
All political power and rights was based on your class. With the elite being the highest social class they were granted the most power. The further down in ranking you were the less important your voice became.
INDEPENDENT FARMERS
- Owned small farms that they worked themselves along family
- Owned maybe few slaves
- Children might be educated from home
- Some were more successful with cash crops and earned more money which allowed them to buy more slaves and move up in social raking, maybe even join the elites.
