First things first get a rat.
Pull a couple tables apart and lay down some sort of cross able bridge.
Record the width of the bridge
and his motivation to cross it
Rats are extremely curious so crossing
a bridge is important to them. Even if
there is nothing on the other side.
Due to my rats incredible exploration skills he crossed almost every bridge I gave him. The ones he didn't I gave him again in later test's.
Through one time he fell
Through all the tough times he was
successful. He crossed that same bridge
right after he fell.
He seemed to cross cardboard like it was nothing and due to cardboard's flexibility I couldn't make it long enough to really test him. So I moved to rope.
It seemed even rope was easy for him. So I moved to the next best thing. A 2 meter long meter stick! I went out into the hallway and laid it out.
At this point I just started wondering what he wouldn't cross! So I laid down some PVC piping.
I even tried glass and he crossed it! With my deadline coming I decided that he would cross anything in the classroom. I didn't have enough time to get other items for him to trek over but still overall he did great.
A rat is a rat. I had alot of trouble at first. I don't think he trusted me. And plus due to my crappy tapeing skills he fell off a table. Once you gain a rats trust he will be your friend!

See if he crosses and record if he did or not on a paper
