Business Intelligence

Business Inteligence is defined as an umbrella therm that combines architectures, tools, data-bases, analytical tools, applications and methodologies.

Some of the major objectives of BI are as follows:

  • To enable access to data
  • To enable manipulation of data
  • To give business managers and analysts the ability to conduct appropriate analysis.

Types of DSS

Benifits of BI

There are different types of DSS with different objectives but two major types are as follows:

1. Model-oriented DSS

It is a DSS in which quantitative models are used to generate a solution for a problem.

2. Data-oriented DSS

It is a DSS which supports and hoc reporting and queries.

One of the main benifit of BI to any company is the ability to provide accurate information at the right time, which includes a real-time view of the corporate performance and its parts.

According to survey of Thompson (2004) following are major benifits:

  • Faster, more accurate reporting
  • Improved decision making
  • Improved customer service
  • Increased revenue

Decision Support System

Scott-Morton defined DSS as " interactive computer-based systems, which help decision makers utilize data and models to solve unstructured problems"

DSS includes :

  • Personal Decision Support Systems
  • Group Support Systems (GSS)
  • Executive information Systems (EIS)
  • Online Analytical Processing Systems (OLAP)
  • Data Warehousing (DW)
