The Effects of Environmental Racism

Slogans and PR Campaigns for Environmental Racism

- The hashtag #EnvironmetalJustice is not very prominent when searched, and the results of the search will yield pictures or tweets about gloabl conservation and preservation of resources rather than environmental racism and its effects

This video discusses the detrimental effects of environmental racism as well as case studies on areas that suffer from environmental racism.

-The EHC uses the slogan "Empowering People. Organizing Communities. Achieving Justice." However, as of now, the organization's efforts are centralized around the San Diego and Tijuana regions of California. Therefore, their slogan is not well versed in social media.

What minority groups are largley affected?

-African Americans

-Latin Americans

-Native Americans

My suggestions to draw awareness:

What is Environmental Racism?

-I would love to see this movement incorporated into the #Blacklivesmatter movement. I feel that with the popularity and notoriety that the #Blacklivesmatter movement already has, it would be easy to incorporate the implications of environmental racism and injustice into the slogan to support the cause.

-I would also love to see more awareness and media publicity drawn to highlight the detrimental long term effects that environmental racism has on these marginalzied groups. Something similar to the segments that CNN already produces such as "Black in America" or "Latino in America."

Environmental Racism

-Policies and activities of governments, corportations, educational institutions, or other large organizations(that have power to influence people), that either intentionally or unintentionally result in people of color &/ low income people being exposed to greater environmental hazards

What organizations are working towards a change?

Two organizations that are working towards making strides for those who are affected by environmental racism are:

-The Commission for Racial Justice

-The Environmental Health Coalition

Cities that have been predominantly affected

sites = toxic waste sites

Commision for Racial Justice

The Environmental Health Coalition

Since 1982 the United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice has investigated and challenged the alarming presence of toxic substances in residential areas accross the country in an effort to make victims aware of the problems as well as enable them to participate in the formulation of solutions and take a proactive rather than reactive stance.

Environmental Health Coalition (EHC) is dedicated to achieving environmental and social justice. They feel that justice is accomplished by empowered communities acting together to make social change. They organize and advocate to protect public health and the environment threatened by toxic pollution. EHC supports broad efforts that create a just society and that foster a healthy and sustainable quality of life.

Leadership Role:

This organization has taken the role of leadership in the form of educator in order to arm those who are at the most risk for environmental racism with knowledge.

The Commison for Racial Justice somewhat fits into the theory of servant leadership due to it's assocition with the church and the organization's need to serve, protect, and fight on behalf of those who are victims of environmental racism.

Leadership:

-The EHC has developed its own leadership model called the: Social Change for Justice Model.

-The organization emphasizes that community based leadership development is critical to achieving success.

-The EHC also has leadersip training for members who want to become deeply involved in the EHC.

-The leadership training, SALTA (Salud Ambiental, Líderes Tomando Acción – Environmental Health, Leaders Taking Action) ensure that all leaders have the skills and experience necessary to achieve environmental justice in their own communities.
