your opinion on invasive species.

Provide reasoning and evidence that

to support your opinion.

Land Use Activity

As previously mentioned, different native species compete with one another for for food and water.

What do you think happens when a non-native species is introduced to an ecosystem?

Non-native organisms (also known as ‘alien’ or ‘exotic’) live outside their natural range usually because they have been deliberately or accidentally introduced there by humans.

Each table group will be assigned a land-use issue.

Half the group will think of pros for the land-use &

the other half of the table group will think of cons.

Use the internet to gather information in support of your stance regarding the issue. While gathering information, think about the needs of the community, biodiversity, and sustainability of the ecosystem.

Friendly Invaders

As bullfrogs are such strong competitors to other frogs and other animals, it greatly disturbs the natural food web that exists in ecosystems that they are introduced into.

In B.C. about 10 per cent of non-native species become invasive, causing ecological damage and economic losses.

Do invasive species always have a negative impact on ecosystems?

Discuss with a partner from your table, and be prepared to share with the class.

The number of non-native plant species in B.C. has increased by 29 per cent since 1994.
