The English wanted land from the Native Americans. The only way the English was getting the land was by taking it from them.

They also wanted some revenge for burning towns and plantations in the South.

Strategic Overview

Motives for the Indians

The English used their more numerous population as an advantage against the much smaller Native American population.

Also the English had guns and a lot of ammunition, but some Native Americans had guns and their flow of ammunitions was the English.

The Indians wanted to correct the colonists on what they are doing and that they should stop expanding.

The Indians wanted to restore justice.

The Indians also wanted to teach proper behavior to the colonists.

The Native Americans had much smaller numbers but they were more prone to fighting than the military of the English because they were taking land as well as their women and children.

The Native Americans had a better understanding of the land, but were out numbered and out gunned compared to the English, which they only enlisted the help of other Native Americans tribes.

The First Anglo-Powhatan War

The English War Ways

The English used their tactics that were used against the Irish, which were harsh and unfair for the duration of the wars.

Many of the "battles" were not battles in fact just small ambush attacks on both sides.

The Native Americans felt that they were getting cheated out of trading with the colonists.

The English did not feel as if they were not at fault for taking the land without the consent of the Native Americans.

The term "Anglo" refers to the English colonists of Virginia.

The Powhatan was a confederacy of Algonquian-speaking tribe, formed around the late 1500s. Before the English had come to the Americas.

A chief from the Indian tribe of Pamunkey, Wahunsonacock brought together 27-43 tribes.

Steps leading to the War

The Native Americans helped the starving colonists by giving them turkeys. The Indian economics was I give you a gift you give me a gift in return.

The English did not understand this and thought that they were giving it from generosity

Anglo-Powhatan Wars

How the wars in Europe are fought differently than the Americas even without guns. Many Indian groups did not fight for land all though some did the majority fought for pride.

A cause for the war was miss communication between the Indian tribes and the English.

The Indians may have explained the importance of reciprocity, which the English did not understand through language and English ethnocentrism.
