Text: The thesis “For father and myself she was incurably ambitious” states that this child’s life is full of constant struggle and stress because their mother is pushing very hard to “make it big” for her husband and her child. The story begins with a summary about her dad stating that he was once a laid back man who had no intention of becoming special until he met a women who became the narrator’s mother. The author shows how over and over again the father is hopelessly trying anything that might have the slightest chance in working, but will always end up in failure and frustration.

Additionally, the paragraph sizing symbolizes the importance and complexity of the story. The short paragraphs tell the reader the important and mandatory information whereas the lengthy paragraphs explain events in extra detail.
In “the Egg” by Sherwood Anderson, the American Dream is significantly portrayed through the egg. Anderson discusses his childhood in a rural town with no sense of possible success. He describes how his parents were quite ambitious and had repeatedly tried to work hard towards their restaurant. This came to an end when his father was laughed at by a customer due to his failed trick he performed at the restaurant. His aggression came to him throwing an egg at the rude customer. The egg broke which symbolizes Anderson’s perspective of the American Dream. This ideology to Anderson was distinct compared to Gatsby. While Anderson discusses how the egg reveals social class and hopeless impossibilities, Gatsby’s version is about love. He was in deep love with a woman and idolized his American Dream to rekindle with her. With Anderson, he has views on the American Dream by having crushed dreams before the possibilities are in the question.
Economically, it is no question that money is a key factor to success. In “the Egg”, Anderson lived in a rural town with a minimal amount of people of gave them business. This led to their failure of succeeding economically which is why Anderson’s father broke. In comparison to the egg metaphor, it shows how the American Dream can primarily be about money and success.
Psychologically, the American Dream can affect a person’s mindset on success and failure. This can drive a completely different personality from people. Success and hope can drive someone into a craze or thrive that may be positive or negative. For Anderson, the American Dream also impacted him in this way. Not only did his parents give up, but Anderson as a child did as well. This can harm any future situations for him within jobs or school.
