Greed

  • As the characters grow more and more irritated and desperate, greed becomes more and more evident as one of the themes.
  • Mr. Van Daan has been stealing food from the pantry in the middle of the night to eat. This is seen in lines 830-840.
  • Mr. Van Daan's action connect to the the main theme because this is greedy and selfish of him to steal others food, while his family goes hungry.

  • The children in the Annex are growing older and beginning to become more mature than they were at the start.
  • Anne is able to have adult, thoughtful discussions with Peter. She is more grateful for the outdoors, and that they are all still alive. This is shown on line 1260 when she says, "Look at the sky now isn't it lovely."
  • This connections to the theme in how she understands how valuable these memories are and important to her growing up.

  • Survival is one of the themes in this story, as the characters try to stay alive during this very tough situation.
  • Mr. Frank makes rules during the day to ensure that no one hears them or suspects anything of them. Mr. Frank says this in lines 285-295.
  • The rules relate to the theme of survival since they made them so could have a chance at living through the Holocaust.
