Like many other musicians of the grunge scene, Layne was related to the heroine. In the 1990s, Layne was struggling with his addiction. On the album Dirt showed his concern on topics such as "Sickman" and "Dirt". Cantrell contributed the lyrics whose themes were his thoughts about death.

Layne staley Death
On April 19, 2002, Layne was found dead at his home. It had been two weeks since he had ingested a cocktail of heroin and cocaine. He was only 34 years old. Another Grunge idol had passed away. Interestingly Layne Staley died just eight years after Kurt Cobain.
