Lady Macbeth

Lady Macbeth carries qualities that women in the audience would've been shocked at.

Lady Macbeth appeared to be a strong, independent, dominant woman who had no children and played a key role in Duncan's death.

Macbeth

' "O never shall sun that morrow see." '

Macbeth plays an important role of the theme appearance V reality.

Lady Macbeth began to fear that Macbeth was ' "..too full o'th'milk of human kindness.." ' to kill Duncan. She then begins to chant to the evil spirits telling them to ' " unsex me here And fill me from the crown to the toe topfull of direst cruelty." ' She then goes on to say ' "Come to my woman's breasts and take my milk for gall.." '

Throughout the play, Macbeth appears to be one thing but in reality is quite the opposite. His own mind begins to trick him at the banquet when he hallucinates that he's seeing the deceased King Banquo.

Horror-struck, Macbeth speaks to the ghost, which is invisible to the rest of the company.

The woman in the audience would've been shocked at what Lady Macbeth was saying women's role was to bear children and take care of them and their husbands.

Macbeth begins to show weakness here, a quality that a "King" isn't supposed to possess. Showing the true appearance of Macbeth

' "Avaunt and quit my sight! Let the Earth hide thee! Thy bones are marrowless, they blood is cold;

Thou hast no specualtion in those eyes

Which thou dost glare with." '

Appearance Versus Reality

Conclusion

Throughout this presentation, we are going to understand how Shakespeare shows that appearance can be deceiving and that people can fool you. Even someone's own mind can trick them into believing something untrue.

Shakespeare has placed the idea that many characters act in a way that is different than how they would. Many characters such as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, try to stay strong and optimistic inside, but in reality they are weak figures with very weak personalities. The witches, on the other hand, act knowledgeable, but inside decieve Macbeth and his actions.

There are many links between the play and the audience of 1600's and also many references to the Bible as society during the Elizabethan era were very religious.

The Witches

The witches appear to be of help to Macbeth in his rise to power by hinting at the future and giving him confidence (which then leads to him committing treason). However, in reality they aid in leading his downfall.

They promise Macbeth that he will obtain three roles. The audience already knew that one of the prophecies has come true.

' "All hail Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!

All hail Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!

All hail Macbeth that shalt be king hereafter!" '
