How does the Atlantic Ocean affect the climate?

How does the Atlantic Ocean affect the landform?

Where Is The Atlantic Maritime?

  • The Atlantic Ocean affects the climate because it causes it to have warmer winters and cooler summers than the rest of Canada. (Tortsen Bernhardt)
  • The places near the coast tend to be more affected because they are closer to the water. They get a lot of precipitation – the inland areas get 900mm while the places near the coast get over 1500mm of precipitation in one year. (Tortsen Bernhardt)
  • This Ecozone also has more storms than everywhere else in the country. (Tortsen Bernhardt)

  • The land of this ecozone includes Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and parts of Quebec. The Appalachian highlands consist of hills covered in deciduous and coniferous trees, as well as exposed rock formation. (E.B. Wiken)
  • The tide from the Atlantic Ocean has eroded the rock formations and shaped the shores. Hopewell Rocks, for example, are rock formations caused by tidal erosion, and are also a tourist attraction. The hills used to be tall mountains, but have eroded over time due to wind and precipitation. (Tortsen Bernhardt)
  • On top of the mountains, forests grow easily because of the rich nutrients in the soil and the abundance of water that the trees need, provided by the Atlantic Ocean. Which means the forestry industry prospers. The lowlands have fertile soils which is very good for agricultural uses and the forestry industry. (E.B. Wiken)

The Atlantic Ocean.

  • The Atlantic Ocean provided a huge supply of fish to this ecozone. Fishing was a very important part of their economy. However, due to overfishing, there was a crash of major fishing stocks. (E.B. Wikens)
  • Agriculture and forestry are also a big part of the economy, because there are fertile soils in this region. The soil provides suitable nutrients for forests in the highlands and farms across the lowlands. (E.B. Wikens)
  • Tourism is also a big part of this ecozone's economy. The Atlantic Ocean provides beautiful scenery and tourist activities such as kayaking, whale watching, and walking through the sea floor of Bay of Fundy during the low-tide times. (E.B. Wikens)

  • The soil is very moist especially in the lowlands. This is due to the rich humus from the decayed leaves and abundant precipitation. This makes it good for agriculture, one of their main industries. (E.B. Wiken)
  • The highlands aren't as rich because of leaching, when excessive amounts of water going in a downward motion creates a thin topsoil, not suitable for farming, however, supports forests. (E.B. Wiken)
  • It consists of deciduous and coniferous trees so it is a mixed vegetation region. The large variety of trees provides lots of trees for the forestry industry. (E.B. Wiken)

  • This ecozone's climate is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, which causes it to have cooler summers and warmer winters. (Tortson Bernhardt)
  • The Atlantic provides a lot of moisture to the region; it’s average precipitation is 900mm a year inland and over 1500mm a year on the coast. This high precipitation also means that the region has more storms than the rest of the country. (Tortson Bernhardt)
  • In the late spring and early summer, a mix of the cold Labrador Current and the warm Gulf Stream make frequent banks of fog over the coastal areas. (E.B. Wiken)

Human Economic Activity

  • The Atlantic Maritime Ecozone has clusters of peninsulas and islands that forms the northeastern end of the Appalachian mountain chain. (E.B. Wiken)
  • This region has a mix of sedimentary and igneous bedrock. Igneous highands form most of the interior of the many peninsulas that make up the Ecozone. The lowlands, formed by sedimentary bedrock, are more accessible, and have better soils for agriculture. (Torsten Bernhardt)
  • In the highlands, you can find acid soils, which are able to support large forests, but are not suitable for farming. (E.B. Wiken)

  • Fish is the most influential and important socio-economic development in this ecozone. The seas off this ecozone were one of the world's richest commercial fisheries for 500 years. However, overfishing caused a decline in the fishing industry. (E.B. Wiken)
  • A short, cool growing season and mediocre soils have caused trouble for farming in many regions. However, there are specialized potato farms on the fertile lowland soils in most of P.E.I. as well as northwestern New Brunswick, along with prosperous fruit orchards in the Annapolis-Cornwallis Valley of Nova Scotia, are much better. (E.B. Wiken)
  • Forestry and tourism are a big part of the economy. This ecozone has an economically strong pulp and paper industry which uses about 65% of the total volume of the wood harvested. This Ecozone has beautiful landscape attractions for tourists such as Cape Breton Island, and the Bay of Fundy. There are also popular activities such as hiking, whale watching, and kayaking in Hopewell Rocks, or walking on the sea floor of Hopewell Rocks. (E.B. Wiken)
