The playground's fence is like the cell membrane. It surrounds the playground just like the cell or plasma membrane surrounds the cell. They both also act like barriers.

A parent of the child playing on the playground is like the nucleus of the cell. The nucleus controls the cell's activities just like the parent is in charge of the child.

This makes the children the chromosomes or chromatin enclosed within the nucleus. This is the actual DNA in its active form inside the nucleus.

The nucleolus is in the very center of the nucleus. It is where the assembly of ribosomes takes place. The swings are always the main and central attraction that kids love at the playground.

The gates on the fence are similar to the nuclear pores on the nuclear membrane. The nuclear pores allow materials to move in and out of the nucleus such as proteins, RNA, and molecules. The gates are where things enter and exit the playground.

If the nuclear pores are like the gates to the playground than the fence can not only be compared to the cell membrane but also the nuclear membrane. This is because the nuclear pores are found on the nuclear membrane.

The mitochondria are like the lunch boxes that the kids bring to enjoy at the picnic tables at the playground. The lunch boxes are full of food that gives the kids energy to run around and play just like energy production occurs in the mitochondria.

Proteins are assembled on the rough ER and then sent to the Golgi apparatus. Proteins can be used for intercellular communication. This makes me think of the ER as the playground equipment where you can talk in one end and someone can hear you on the other end of the playground. Sort of like a drive-through.

I compared the Golgi apparatus to a more abstract idea. When the kids are told it is time to leave they prepare themselves by going down the slide or doing the monkey bars one more time. This is similar to how the Golgi basically prepares proteins and other materials to leave the cell.

If the ER is related to the piece of playground equipment where children can talk to each other, then the ribosome is the actual message they are sending to each other. This is because the ribosomes are located on the rough ER.

Trashcans in the playground where the kids can throw away trash from their lunches are like vacuoles. Vacuoles are large empty appearing areas in the cytoplasm that store waste.

The parts of the cytoskeleton help transfer materials between different parts of the cell. The parts could be microfilaments, microtubules, cilia, and flagella. The playground equipment that helps people move to and from places are comparable to the parts of the cytoskeleton. This could be the monkey bars, fireman's pole, a set of stairs, rock climbing walls, a tunnel or a sliding board.

The microtubules are hollow which makes me mostly think of a tunnel and the microfilaments are thread-like which makes me most think of a fireman's pole.

The members of the maintenance crew that are responsible for keeping the playground in good condition are like the lysosomes. The lysosomes can break down organelles and molecules and are responsible for getting rid of the "junk."

The mulch that fills the playground is like the cytoplasm because the cytoplasm is the portion of the cell outside of the nucleus.
