“I’m First” – Stories from First-Gen College Students

The Stats

According to the US Dept of Education (2010), nearly 50% of college students are first-generation.

Three out of five first-gen college students will not complete a degree or certification program within six years.

More than a quarter of low-income first-gen students leave college after their first year - four times the dropout rate of higher-income second-generation students.

What do we mean when we say “first-generation?”

First-Gen Cobbers

A student is considered "first-generation" if:

  • they are the first person in their immediate family to attend college.
  • the highest degree attained by either parent was a high school diploma (or equivalent/less).
