Hemingway suggested that

writers should 'show,' rather than 'tell'

the reader information, in order to force them to

deduce and infer meaning for themselves.

Writers often use symbols, setting, theme and

characters to 'show but not tell. '

People often forget that a symbol can have

more than one interpretation - A/A* students

will evaluate/read between the lines from different

angles not just the most obvious. This is called

exploring the implicit meaning.

What could a forest symbolise?

What could a train journey symbolise?

What could a rose symbolise?

Think of:

A character

A setting

A film/book

A prop

And write down its possible

meanings from your own evaluation

What is the importance of chapter 11?

Try to think of at least three ways that this

chapter is important. Focus on the implicit

meanings.
