Customs and Culture

  • Smoking was a part of the Greasers' customs during the time. Ponyboy says that smoking helps him cool down and relax.

For example, "Everyone sat down to have a smoke and relax. A smoke always lessons the tension" (12).

  • Fashion was also different during the time. Greasers wore their hair with hair oil, and dressed very simple (jeans, t-shirts, and leather jackets). On the other hand Socs wore madras shirts, and more expensive things because they were rich.
  • For example, " ..We wear our hair long and dress in blue jeans and t-shirts, or leave our shirttails out and wear leather jackets and tennis shoes or boots" (3).

Customs and Cultures

  • Drive-ins are also very important in the Outsiders because that is where Ponyboy meets Cherry Valence.

  • For example, "I'm walking over to the Nightly Double tomorrow night" (14). The Nightly Double is a Drive-in.

  • Mustangs and Corvairs were very big during the time. Socs usually drove them.

  • "...Gave us the same look that Socs did when they came by in their Mustangs and Corvairs" (15).

EXAMPLES:

  • An example that shows that the church was in Windrixville is, "Hop the three fifteen freight the Windrixville...We climbed up the road to the church, although it was a lot farther away than it looked" (66).
  • An example that they got jumped in the park is, "The blue Mustang was circling the park slowly" (54).
  • Evidence that the rumble happened in the lot is, "Tim Shepard and company were already waiting when we arrived at the vacant lot, along with a gang from Brumly, one of the suburbs" (138).

Place

  • Windrixville is one place that is very important to the Outsiders. Johnny and Ponyboy run away to the town, and that is the place where they save the children in the church..
  • The park is important because that is where Johnny kills Bob. This action leads to other important things in the story.
  • The lot is important because that is where the rumble took place, and where Johnny got beat up before the story.

Setting

  • Setting is the time, place customs and culture of a story.

  • Today, we will be showing how the setting effects the plot in The Outsiders

60s

Time

  • Time of The Civil Rights Movement

  • S.E Hinton kept things relatively white

  • There are only white greasers and Socs.

Time

  • Time is important to the story because that was when the two social groups, the Greasers and the Socs, existed.
  • This effects the story because the rivalry motivates the way the characters act and their choices.
  • For example, "The Socs and us are having all-out warfare all over the city. That kid you killed had plenty of friends and all over town it's Soc against grease" (83). This emphasizes how the killing of Bob makes the Socs crazy about beating the greasers.
