The Juvie Three

Conclusion

Gordon Korman

The boys learned there lesson and the book has a happy ending although most people wouldn't be so lucky in this case. A lot of times there wouldn't be a second chance so it's best to always try to make the most responsible decisions in everyday life.

Question: If you're put in a situation that you could be in a lot of trouble if you choose to confess an accident that took place or cover it up and suffer larger consequences if caught, what would you do?

Characters

Gecko: The author always describes Gecko by saying his favorite hobby is not thinking. He's the first of three boys the reader is introduced to and is in juvenile detention because he was the getaway driver (although not old enough to own a license) for his brother, who was robbing a video game store. Gecko makes a big sacrafice t the end of the book.

Arjay: A true gentle giant Arjay's only mistake was defending himself. His football team came after himself and he punched the Quarterback in the face. The punch made him fall, but landing on the School Statue killed him. Arjay is never in fights with the other two and always tries to keep the peace. The only bad mistake he makes is joining a band because he loves to play guitar

Terrance: The least responsible of all three boys, Terrance was involved in one of Chicago's biggest gangs. He is the only one of the boys that backtracks and goes back to breaking the law. Terrance is the trouble maker in the story but becomes quite useful in the break in to the Psychiatric Ward.

Douglas Healy: The man that fought to have his dream of the halfway house experiment happen. Although Mr. Healy never tells them he was in the same position as the three boys were and never got a second chance as he was giving them.

Summary

Theme: Responsibility/ Second Chance

A second chance at something comes with responsibility. An individual must know what went wrong the first time and be able to fix it and turn it around with their new chance.

I chose Responsibility as my theme because it can be a very wide topic and is represented in many different ways in Korman's book. First of all after the incident that put Douglas Healy in the hospital the boys did the right thing and drove him too the hospital, although they stole a car to do it. However they didn't take immediate responsibility for their mishap and decided to not tell anyone about it which could have gotten them into even more trouble in the end, if not for a lucky break. They do all the things that they agreed to do even though Healy wasn't around to supervise and do a very good job with keeping the situation under control despite their individual problems developed. In the end I think all threeof the boys in the story learned their lesson and along with it a lot of responsibility.

The Juvie three is based on 3 boys (Gecko, Arjay, & Terrance) who are all in Juvenile correction centers for various reasons. When a man named Douglas Healy starts an experimental program giving these kids second chances. The boys get shipped to an apartment in Manhattan where they are kept under close watch and put under strict rules. School, counseling, and community work. One night the boys get in a fight and accidentally knock Mr. Healy over a railing. While their supervisor is in the hospital in a coma, they three of them work together to keep the secret from getting out, however they are finding difficulties. Gecko falls in love with Roxanne, who's uncle is the Deputy Chief of police, Arjay joins a successful band and Terrance attempts to join a New York gang. The boys are doing well keeping up with there studies and other activities and haven't been caught until Ms. Vaughn, a woman set on seeing the boys slip up, tells them she'll be starting weekly visits. This comes after the news that Mr. Healy, now out of the comma, has been taken to a Psychiatric Ward to recover from his memory loss. The boys and Roxanne team up and break Healy out of the Ward but when they get home the gang in which Terrance tried to join is waiting for them. A brawl breaks out and the police show up. Mr. Healy regains his memory upon stepping out onto the fire escape platform that he had fell off of. The Deputy of Police, impressed with the fact that the boys hadn't abandoned Healy and the halfway house, let them off the hook as long as Gecko stop seeing his niece, Roxanne. Agreeing however not with ease the boys are back on schedule and happy to be so aswell with Mr. Healy healthy once more.
