Hooverblankets and "Hoovervilles"

By Joshua Wood

Hooverville

Hooverville is a popular name for the run down shanty towns built in the Great Depression. It is named after Prsident Herbert Hoover.

Poor Life

The bad economy of the Great Depression increased the number of hobos and tramps. They set of Hooverville camps on land near soup kitchens run by charities. These settlements were formed on small land, and were made of tents and shacks. Most of the people living there used scraps and whatever they could find to build with.

The New Deal enacted special relief programs aimed at the homeless to help them.

The Term "Hoover"

The term Hoover came from the president at the time. His name was Herbert Hoover. He was blamed for letting the economy slip and causeing all the homeless people. There were more terms other than just Hoovervilles. A Hoover blanket was an old newspaper used as blanketing. A Hover flag was an empty pocket turned inside out. Hoover leather was carboard used to line worn out shoes. A Hoover wagon was an automobile hitched with horses, because the owner could not afford fuel.
