Contributions and Results of the making of ASL.

What is community? How are decisions made about who belongs and who is excluded?

Community is a bunch of people gathered together with one major trait in common. Like the Deaf community, they are all Deaf and they all sign ASL. Decisions should be made in majority so that people don't get offended or left out, they might have good counterpoints and come up with a compromise. People excluded is simply those not involved or those who disrespect people within the community. People who do not know ASL and that are not involved are not a part of the ommunity. People who might disrespect ASL and Deaf people are definetly NOT a part of the community.

What obligations do people in society have toward one another and future generations?

By Lauryn, Ashly,

Rachel , Kenzie

They are obligated to improve so that their future can be better. They are obligated to improve for the future generations because they need to be educated so they can do things on their own. They have to learn a sign language, their history, how to live in the world without a parent or buddy always with them, etc. But they can't do that unless someone from the earlier years makes it possible.

The School Now

The American School for the Deaf is still open

to this day. It now has 174 students with 94 of them residential. They have 328 staff members total at the new school. They have 325 community sign classes. The school is still doing exteremly well to this day with no immediate problems concerning the school shutting down.

Why do some people standby during times of injustice while others try to do something to stop or prevent injustice?

Clerc and Gallaudet contributed greatly to the history and future of ASL. Instead of watching the Deaf community be discriminated and uneducated they took action and made a Deaf school to give them a better chance at success and a good future. Others might standby because they are shy and don't like to stand out, they like to blend in with what everyone else is doing. Other might prevent it because they are jealous and selfish, their personal opinion might be against the right thing to do.

Thomas Gallaudet

Thomas Gallaudet was a hearing man. Gallaudet was born on December 10, 1787. At a young age Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was a Yale- Educated American. He was soon aware of the lack of educational oppritunities for the Deaf and decided to try and help out. He was the man that founded the very first Deaf school along with Laurent Clerc on April 15, 1817. He died on September 10, 1851 at the age of 64.

Clerc and Gallaudet in Action

Introducing Gallaudet and Clerc

From this point on Clerc was completely immersed in his studies and his education. He soon met Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet around 1816 and they traveled around trying to convince people Deaf education was worth fighting for. In 1817 Clerc and Gallaudet soon raised tons of money and opened the first permanent school for the Deaf.

Laurent Clerc and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet were both educators of the Deaf. Clerc is a Deaf man whereas Gallaudet was hearing.

American School For The Deaf

In Hartford, Conneticut on April 15, 1817 Gallaudet was made principal, and Clerc was made a teacher at the first Deaf school. The school did well and they were successful in teaching the kids. Clerc however retired in 1858 and he still attended the major meetings to ensure the future of the school.

Laurent Clerc

Laurent Clerc is a Deaf man who was born on December 26, 1785. He became Deaf around a year old. He fell off his high chair into the fireplace and became Deaf and lost his sense of smell.. He started his education at the Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Paris when he was 12 years old. His family was hearing and it is unknown whether they did sign language with him after he became Deaf. Laurent Clerc died on July 18, 1869 at the age of 84.
