Carbon Dating Uranium-lead dating

Type

of

decay:

Alpha decay

Alpha and Beta decay

Uses:

Uranium is better for testing minerals. E.g Rocks

Carbon dating is best for testing organic samples. E.g Cloths, bones and

wood.

Difference Between Carbon Dating and Uranium-lead dating

Carbon dating Uranium-Lead dating

Half Life: 5730 years

U238 to Pb 206-4.46 billion years

U235 to Pb 207-704 million years

Reliability:

Not reliable when determining

a sample that is beyond 20,000 years old.

If the sample has been in water for a long period, the accuracy of the uranium-lead dating will decrease. Lead is very soluble in water and can sometimes escape from the sample

Carbon Dating

Uranium-lead dating allowed scientists to determine the age of the Blanche Cave in South Australia to be over 500 000 years. By observing the amount of uranium in the soda straw stalactites and compared to the Concordia diagram

Carbon dating is another radiometric technique used to determine the age of a sample. The isotopes of carbon 14 is measured and carbon dating can be used in varieties things such as bone, cloth and wood.

The Concordia Diagram is used when determining the ratio of uranium and lead in a sample.

What is Uranium-Lead dating ?

The experiment was carried through by measuring the amount of uranium in the soda straw stalactites.

The series of decay from uranium 238 to lead 206(stable element)

How has uranium-lead dating contributed to researching the history of the world and how is it different from Carbon dating?

Uranium-lead dating is a radiometric technique

used to determine the age of ancient objects.

The process involved measuring of the uranium

isotopes 235 or 238 and compared to the amount

of lead 206 or 207 present in a sample.

How does it work ?

Isoptopes often have unstable nuclei and undergoes decay to stable element. Uranium 235 and 238 are isotopes of Uranium and in general uranium 238 will decay to lead 206 and uranium 235 will decay to lead 207 via alpha and beta decays.

More background Infomation

By using the uranium-lead dating, scientists were able to identified the painting is approximately 24000 to 29300 years old and this has supported the presence of ancestors of East Timor theory.
