FREEDOM RIDERS AIMS

In February 1965 the Student Action For Aboriginals ( SAFA ) was introduced , these were a couple students from the university of Sydney led by Charles Perkins to go on a journey in a bus and show people the poor and unhealthy conditions the Aboriginals lived in they hoped to stop racism and all kinds of discrimination against Aboriginals . They were inspired by the Freedom Riders of the American Civil Rights Movement . Most people did not like the Freedom Riders but they continued to try and achieve their goal even though most were threatened and some were even beat up .

  • First Aboriginal Australian to graduate from university .
  • Suffered racial prejudice & discrimination as a child .
  • He led the Australian Freedom Ride in 1965 .
  • Perkins was a gifted soccer player & played professionally for the English club .
  • He tried his hardest to regain aboriginals rights and freedom and achieved .
  • They aimed to encourage the Aboriginal people to stand up for them selves and not accept racism from the whites .
  • They wanted to bring attention to the unhealthy lifestyle that the Aboriginals lived .
  • They wanted everyone to treat Aboriginals normally and stop segregating them from everyone else .
  • To stop all sorts of discrimination , racism and prejudice against the Aboriginals

WHAT THEY ACHIEVED

  • Aboriginals started standing up for themselves .
  • Some whites started to notice how poorly the Aboriginals were being treated and joined the Freedom Riders on their journey by the end of it most of the white people were being fair to the Aboriginals .
  • Most segregation laws were broken such as the no darkies allowed in the pool .
  • The media was encouraging it and taking photos and posting them in the newspapers ( the media plays a huge role in society )
