Water Pollution in China

Brian David, Conan Lee, Jared Rivor, Julianna Manseau, Selena Weng

Pacific Environment

Support the growth and development of Grassroots Organizations

  • Host annual training and networking
  • greater focus on industrialization and strengthening of federal regulation
  • Ex: factories and plant
  • Green Hunan
  • Green Stone (focus on Nanjing, Jiansu)

Actions

Development of Grassroots Organizations

  • Engaging of local community efforts to focus on specific pollution issues
  • Unification of people to help achieve a common goal to influence China's laws and regulations

Heavily polluted Ruian River, where trash completely clogs canal at the edge of Beijing.

Green Neighbors program in metropolitan area of Nanjing

The Xiang River has been polluted to the point where human contact was prohibited

Background I

  • January 2016 study of 2,103 wells in China's eastern flatland watersheds showed that:
  • 47.3 percent of the wells were deemed unfit for any type of human consumption
  • 32.9 percent were considered suitable only for industrial and agricultural use.

China's Progress

  • Backup water sources
  • Tiered pricing for household water consumption
  • Positive results
  • China’s Biological oxygen demand (BOD) decreased 12.9%
  • China's ammonia (NH3) decreased 13%
  • 5.7% increase in drinkable surface water

Water pollution has caused:

  • contaminated soil
  • sick children

China has and is currently dealing with problem of factories which are violating their pollution permit

  • weak federal regulation

Challenges Faced

  • China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) is understaffed
  • Inefficient enforcement of policies
  • Lack of transparency,
  • Lack of accountability
  • Lack of public participation

Thank You!

Pollution

China's environmental issues stem far beyond the scope of simply air pollution...

Plans II

Plans I

The reality

Why is there water pollution?

  • Factories
  • Run off from farms
  • Lack of regulatory bodies
  • No government action for years

  • 1- 70% heavily polluted water -> Grade III
  • 2- improve urban drinking water
  • 3- less groundwater pollution
  • 4- reduce Grade V+ water (unusable)
  • 5- 70% coastal water reach Grade I or II

  • Improved ecological environment by 2050.

Stricter industry & agriculture pollutant rules

  • Factories polluting the environment heavily have been threaten with new policies

Statistics

  • 80 % of China's cities do not have a single waste treatment facility
  • 33% of all industrial waste finds it way into the water
  • 90% of all household waste finds it way into the water
  • 280 mill no access to safe drinking water (2014)

  • 9.2% groundwater is unsuitable for ag (2014)

  • Water Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (2015)
  • Plan to improve the coastal and river’s water by 2020

  • Key interest - 7 rivers, 9 coastal bays, 3 regions, 36 cities.

Background II

  • Activities that ruin water quality: dumping of industrial chemicals, agricultural waste, urban waste water, and deposits of metal into rivers
  • 70% of the nation’s water pollution comes from fertilizers as runoff, pesticides, and animal waste
  • Many heavy metals eventually winding up into a food supply in many communities around the country.
