RECOVERY

As the news of the cyclone spread many countries felt sympathy for East Pakistan and donated money. About 70 countries donated money to East Pakistan. Some of the biggest donations were 39 million dollars from the USA, 5.4 million dollars from Great Britain, and 4.9 million dollars from the United Nations.

These people survived the cyclone and are standing in line to get fresh water.

INTRODUCTION

The Bhola cyclone occurred on November 11th in 1970 in east Pakistan. The cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal and then moved on to Bhola island killing thousands of people.

DAMAGED PROPERTY

The Bhola cyclone had left thousands of people homeless. It damaged over $490 million dollars worth of property. Approximately 85% of the homes in the area it hit were destroyed.

This is one of the many destroyed properties.

THANK YOU FOR WATCHING

Tropical cyclones are fueled by the warm moist air near oceans. That is why they only form in the warm waters of the oceans near the equator. They begin when the moist air starts to rise from near the oceans surface. Since the air is now moving away from the surface there is now less air left at the surface.

This diagram shows the warm air rising leaving the low pressure air at the bottom

THE BHOLA CYCLONE VIDEO

DEATH TOLL

The Bhola cyclone wiped out several villages in East Pakistan killing approximately 500,000 people. This included 45 percent of the Tazumuddin region. 80 percent of the 500,000 people that died were farmers, 12 percent were fisherman and the rest were shopkeepers, clerks, and factory workers.

Eventually the air from the surrounding areas with higher air pressure pushes into the low pressure area. After that new air also becomes warm and moist and then rises. As it rises and cools off the water in the air also cools off. Then the clouds and winds spin and grow, while being fueled by the evaporating water and ocean's heat.

FORMATION

This picture shows the population in the low elevated area around the Bay of Bengal.

WHY SO PRONE TO FLOODING

The Bangladesh, Myanmar and India costs are very prone to flooding. This is because these areas are very high in population because of the agriculture, and very low in elevation, causing more deaths. Also, the northern end of the Bay of Bengal is very shallow and narrow. This constructs a funnel for the surge from forceful tropical cyclones going north or northeast to the low elevation ares.

The small red arrows show the warm air rising and forming clouds around the eye. The blue arrows represent the cold air sinking into the eye. The big red arrows show the rotation of the rising clouds.

As the cyclone rotates rapidly it forms an eye in the middle. At the eye there is very low pressure and its very calm and motionless. Then higher pressure air from overhead joins the eye. Most tropical cyclones decline after hitting the ground because then they don't have any thing to fuel them.
