An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment used to communicate the results of data processing carried out by an information processing system (such as a computer) which converts the electronically generated information into human-readable form.

Many everyday devices uses of a computer require the user to listen to different types of sounds. For example;

  • Listening to music
  • Watching a movie
  • Browsing videos on YouTube
  • Multimedia websites

Its used in many devices such as radios, television, music centres, computers and headphones

CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube, this is because it presents text and graphics visually using a cathode ray tube but is now being gradually being replaced by LCD based screens.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, its used in homes and office computing and gradually replacing CRT monitors. The screen is made up of thousands tiny pixels. Each pixel has 3 transisitors : red, green and blue. THis allows huge amounts of colors to be produced.

LED monitors stand for light emitting Diode (emits light when activated) the difference between LCDs and LEDs are that it uses diodes instead of florescent lighting to backlight the screen.

Can be connected to a computer, televison

etc. To present information to a large audience or to ensure a clear view for everyone.

Can serve as both input and output device as user input can also be shown on the screen.

A touchscreen or touch screen is a computer screen that can be used by touching it with a finger or a stylus pen, instead of using a mouse and keyboard. Touchscreens are used in personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablet computers, smartphones and other devices.

Some touchscreens are capable of pressure-sensitive input, in which thicker lines are made on the screen when the user pushes harder down on the digital pen.

Interactive whiteboards, which can be found in many schools, use a simple form of touch technology.

OUTPUT DEVICES

Done by : Technical difficulties

LCD/TFT Monitors

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • Lower picture quality (compared to a CRT monitor.
  • Images appear unclear when viewed from a certain angle (Some earlier models).
  • Due to their thinner bodies they cn be easily damaged.
  • Lighter and thinner than CRT monitors and becoming cheaper.
  • Uses very little power, so lower running costs.
  • Modern screens can also incorporate touch technoogy.
  • Can be wall mounted.

LED Monitor

Disadvantages

Advantages

  • Newer technology can be more expensive.
  • Not as effective on very large screens
  • Lower energy consumption
  • Improved image quality compared to older LCDs

What is a peripheral device ?

What is a display device?

A peripheral device is generally defined as any auxiliary device such as a computer mouse or keyboard that connects to and works with the computer in some way. Other examples of peripherals are image scanners, tape drives, microphones, loudspeakers, webcams, and digital cameras.

Types of output ?

A display device is an output device for presentation of information ( text, graphics or video information) visual or tactile form .When the input information is supplied as an electrical signal, the display is called an electronic display or soft copy as it exists eletronically and is present for a temperary period of time. Display devices include CRT monitors, LCD monitors and displays, gas plasma monitors, and televisions.

An output device is a peripheral devicethat recives data from a computer

Some types of output are text, graphics, tactile, audio, and video. Text consists of characters (letters, numbers, punctuation marks, or any other symbol requiring one byte of computer storage space) that are used to create words, sentences, and paragraphs. Graphics are digital representations of nontext information such as drawings, charts, photographs, and animation (a series of still images in rapid sequence that gives the illusion of motion). Tactile output such as raised line drawings may be useful for some individuals who are blind. Audio is music, speech, or any other sound. Video consists of images played back at speeds to provide the appearance of full motion.

Tip: Keep in mind that drives such as a CD-ROM, DVD, Floppy diskette drive, and USB Flash drive may be capable of receiving information from the computer, but they are not output devices. These are considered storage devices.

CRT Monitor

Advantages

  • Bright clear display.
  • Low price
  • Can display text, graphics, photos and videos.
  • A wide viewing angle.

Disadvantages

  • Large and heavy
  • Being replaced by TFT(thin framed transistor) screens.
  • Unsuitable for those with visual disabilties.
  • use lots of power, increasing running costs.

EXAMPLE: Speakers

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • Unsuitable for those with hearing difficulties.
  • High quality speakers can be expensive.
  • It can cause noise pollution in certain areas.
  • Available in many different shapes
  • and sizes.
  • Able to output information to very large audiences.
  • Long lasting due to their simple consturction.
  • They can help blind people use a computer as text can be turned into sound.

What is an output device?

Multimedia projector

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • It is portable, unless mounted to a wall.
  • Able to produce a larger display than monitors.
  • Although, portable it still requires a large power source.
  • Requires a darkened room to prooduce a brighter picture.
  • Space is needed to project upon and for the projector to be positioned at a suitable distance.
  • The lamps are very expensive to be replaced.

Touch screens

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • Displays can be blocked by fingers using the screen.
  • Marks from physical interaction can affect the view.
  • Interaction can instantly be seen on screen.
  • Users can quickly change the information being displayed.
