Did he produce his own invention or did he modernise someone else's?

In 1698 Thomas Savery allowed Thomas Newcomen to make a copy of his steam pump. Thomas Newcomen set up this pump in his backyard, where he worked on improving the design. Denis Papin also inspired Newcomen with his steam digester.

Thomas Newocmen expanded someone elses idea by overcoming its flaws. Newcomen invented a model which used the same power source but used a more productive cycle.

- First practical steam engine for pumping water.

- Created in 1710 near Dudley in the West Midlands.

- By the time Thomas Newcomen died there

were over 100 of his engines.

- Used to pump water out of the coal mines.

- Power steam ships.

- To power trains.

The steam pump has been modernised by James Watt. He designed a safer engine that used less coal/wood to run. It also removed more water from greater depths.
