In 1698 Thomas Savery allowed Thomas Newcomen to make a copy of his steam pump. Thomas Newcomen set up this pump in his backyard, where he worked on improving the design. Denis Papin also inspired Newcomen with his steam digester.
Thomas Newocmen expanded someone elses idea by overcoming its flaws. Newcomen invented a model which used the same power source but used a more productive cycle.

The steam pump has been modernised by James Watt. He designed a safer engine that used less coal/wood to run. It also removed more water from greater depths.
