The Origin of Brazil

Bibliography

  • Brazil was first discovered by "Portugal" in the 16th century.
  • It was primarily inhabited by peasants and released prisoners. That is until 1808 when Don John flees there.
  • In 1815 Don John made his son the regent prince, giving him authority to govern Brazil.

Don Joao and Portugal

  • After a long term residency in Brazil Don Joao was commanded, by the portuguese court, to return to Portugal.
  • They threatened to overthrow him as king.
  • But not wanting to lose contact with brazil he left his eldest son, Don Pedro, to reign as emperor.

Don Pedro, the Emperor

  • After various skirmishes with the portuguese military, Don Pedro came into agreement to pay of the portuguese for the land and resources for their acceptance of them as an independent nation.
  • They were also recognized as independent by the United States of America and Great Britain.
  • Post revolution Don Pedro was official coronated as emperor and was given supreme power over the government.

Declaring Independence

  • D. Pedro was on the borders of Rio Ipiranga when he received a letter
  • The letter was sent from the Portugeis courts
  • After he read the letter he announced: "Independencia ou Morte", meaning Liberty or Death. Declaring the upcoming seperation from Portugal.

At War with Portugal

  • After Don Pedro declared his intentions to become independent of Portugal the military forces in Brazil attempted to overthrow him returning control of Brazil to the portuguese courts.
  • Soon after Don Pedro forced the portuguese military forces to leave Brazil.
  • Unwilling to give up their territory without a fight, the portugesse invaded brazilian soil.
