What is Stress

Self-Concept is the way you view yourself overall. (physically, mentally, socially, student, child, friend, etc.)

Emotions - feelings such as love, joy, or sadness

Mood Swings - frequent changes in emotional state

Stress - is the body's response to real or imagined dangers or other life events.

Lesson 5 - Mental and emotional Problems

Stressors - sources of stress

Your body's response to stress - Flight or fight

Adrenaline - Hormone that increases the level of sugar in the blood, giving your body extra energy.

After the stressful situation you may feel fatigue.

Signs of M/E Problems

  • loss of appetite
  • personal appearance
  • trouble falling asleep
  • some may hear voices

What are mental and emotional disorders - illnesses that affect a person's thoughts, feelings, and behavior.

Causes of M/E disorders

Warning signs

  • talking about suicide
  • saying final goodbyes to friends and loved ones
  • Give away possessions
  • engaging in risky behaviors
  • interest in death or violence
  • wanting to be left alone

Emotions are not positive or negative, it is how we react to them which makes them positive or negative

Types of M/E disorders

Better to have a mad friend than a dead one!

For us to be healthy our basic needs must be met.

  • Social - give and receive love, feel recognized, and feel connected to people or groups

How to build your self-esteem

  • set realistic goals
  • focus on what your naturally good at
  • ask for help when needed
  • accept that no one is perfect
